Obtaining a Florida Boat Title

New Vessels

The proof of ownership for a new vessel is the manufacturer's certificate of origin or its equivalent such as a statement of builder. The proof of ownership must show a complete description of the vessel and a complete chain of ownership. The proof of ownership must be submitted along with a properly completed HSMV form 82040 or HSMV 82041, the Florida driver license or Florida Id card of all owners or a FEID number if the applicant is a business. The applicant must also produce proof of sales tax paid, proof of sales tax exemption or be prepared to pay sales tax at the time of titling and registration.

Used Vessels

The proof of ownership for a used vessel is a title. Many states do not require titles. The proof of ownership for a non-titled vessel is a registration and a notorized bill of sale. All Florida registered vessels are titled so that even a previously non-titled vessel once registered in the state of Florida will become a titled vessel. Proof of ownership must be submitted along with a properly completed HSMV form 82040 or HSMV 82041, the Florida driver license or Florida Id card of all owners or a FEID number if the applicant is a business. The applicant must also produce proof of sales tax paid, proof of sales tax exemption or be prepared to pay sale tax at the time of titling and registration.
